Summer boost for tourism in Darjeeling
SILIGURI, May 14: Scorching heat may be a bane for the common people, but it’s a boon for the tourism industry in Darjeeling.

According to Mr Gopal Lama, deputy director, West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation, tourist inflow has increased in Darjeeling this year, thanks to heat wave in most parts of the country.
“Domestic tourists have made a beeline for Darjeeling from across the country,” Mr Lama, said.
According to official records, between January and March this year, more than 13,594 foreign tourists and 40,632 domestic tourists visited the Darjeeling Hills. The April record has so far not been made available by the tourism department.
Mr Raj Basu, executive president of Eastern Himalaya Travel and Tour Operators’ Association, said: “It’s not just Darjeeling, this year tourist inflow has increased in Sikkim also. Along with the heat wave factor, infrastructure improvement has also helped us to draw a large number of tourists to the region this year.”
